Program to Raise Leaders for the Next Generation

Reinforcement of human capital is one of the priority issues of the group. Human resources is the biggest management resources for us. We, thus, consider it as the source of our value creation. Especially, we have focused on nurturing the next generation of top management who will lead the growth of the group. We started the “Next Generation Leader Nurturing Program” on 2010 for such a reason.

From fiscal 2018 on, we started on a consecutive and systematic nurturing approach for approximately 100 longlisted next generation management aspired staffs from each group company. We implement various programs such as lectures, temporary assignment to other organizations and coaching, specifically designed according to nurturing plans of each candidate.

We also establish on fiscal 2018 the “Benesse University” and “open courses” for the purpose of developing young employees. The five-month training program consists of lectures by senior managers and external instructors, training camp on Naoshima island and action-based learning that attempts to solve actual problems. Participants were trained to become proactive action-takers. By also establishing deeper connections through extensive interactions with each other, the participants established cooperative working relationships that transcend the boundaries of individual companies. These training efforts are continuously ongoing, as the third year of this program in fiscal 2020 online with consideration to prevent coronavirus COVID-19.

Open courses, on the other hand, are the ones which all employees in the group can attend. The courses introduce issues such as digital, AI and EdTech. We expect participants to associate those issues with their own tasks, to stimulate their growth willingness, to develop their intrinsic motivation and further to promote transformative corporate culture.

Globalizing Human Resources

The Benesse Group is recruiting and developing human resources who are capable of performing globally. Berlitz Corporation emphasizes development through practice, such as "in-house job posting system." Taking a medium-to longterm perspective, Benesse Corporation sends younger employees on overseas assignments to gain international business experience, in addition to assigning the personnel needed to expand business. Personnel for such assignments are selected through an open recruitment system and dispatched to the areas including the United States, China, Indonesia and Taiwan.

Open internal hiring in the Benesse Group

The group has an open internal hiring scheme to give employees the opportunity to work elsewhere within the group (up to one transfer between companies per year is allowed). The career experience gained by taking on the challenge of working at other companies is seen as contributing to personal growth. Successful applicants are determined through screening and interviews.
The group will continuously support employees to build their careers at their own will by giving them opportunities for key and newly launched positions.
