The Benesse Group earnestly began health management in 2019. The health of our employees and their families is an important capital for the company. Health management is therefore one of our important management challenges.
We do not see the issue of health only as a compliance issue concerning occupational health, nor do we see it only as a risk management issue such as the loss of labor through employees’ illnesses and injuries. Under our corporate philosophy of “Benesse (Well-being),” we believe that creating a work environment that enables our employees to work in a vigorous, enthusiastic way and making best use of their talent will ultimately make us an indispensable group of companies that seek to deliver services that enrich people’s lives and that our customers, regions, and society as a whole can support. To attain this goal, our companies, employees, and health insurance cooperatives are all working as one to pursue better health.
The Benesse Group announced the Benesse Group Health Declaration in January 2018 in our efforts to become the No.1 company in terms of employee health.
Driven by its corporate philosophy of “Benesse (Well-being),” the Benesse Group declares its commitment to working to maintain and promote the health of our employees and their families.
Representative Director and Chairman, CEO
The Benesse Group promotes group-wide health measures under a structure with the President of Benesse Holdings as Chief Health Officer and the Bureau of Management of Good Health established in the Human Resources Division collaborating with human resources, safety, and health sections of each group member company.
In addition to the challenges identified in the previous years, we are promoting measures that address the issues unique to this term. These include growing health awareness in the face of COVID-19 risks and the lack of exercises in new, rapidly expanding work environments such as remote work.As in the previous year, we have, among other things, offered a women’s health seminar and short exercise seminars continuously over a certain period of time. Delivering these seminars online has enabled more employees to participate.
Based on the results of the Health Scoring Report* and a health awareness survey conducted by Benesse Corporation, we had identified the Group’s health challenges as improving diets and reducing health problems with no clearly identified cause.
To resolve the first issue, we planned a seminar consisting of a lecture and practical training with the theme of improving a diet. For the second issue, we also planned an online seminar on the prevention and care of women’s diseases. These are group-wide initiatives offered to employees in Japan as well as overseas. According to the results of a survey of the seminar participants conducted more than six months after the seminars, nearly 70% of the participants experienced positive change in their lifestyle habits that had led to a better health outcome.
*The Health Scoring Report is a report on the physical condition, medical costs, prevention and health improvement efforts, and other health-related issues of the members of health insurance cooperatives and so on. Scores are given to the assessment results and notified to the management.
The participating teams and individuals chose a healthy activity from 20 options, which included dieting, quitting smoking, and taking regular walks, and they continued this same activity for two months. The Group Human Resources Office at Benesse Holdings functioned as the secretariat of the Campaign, while the director in charge took the lead in participating in the Campaign. Approximately 300 employees and 23 teams participated from Benesse Corporation, Benesse Style Care, and other Group companies.
As a result of the Campaign, 73.8% of the participants saw some improvement in their general wellness, lifestyle habits, weight, blood pressure levels, or other health statistics.
Good health is the most important factor for individuals to fully unleash their potential. The survey results and the actual cases reconfirmed that a small trigger could change people’s health awareness, leading to an improvement in their lifestyles.
An environment where diverse human resources can unleash their abilities is a prerequisite for nurturing a corporate culture where each employee tries to improve by learning from each other for their respective growth. The Benesse Group Principles state that “We believe that before we become good business people, we must live as responsible members of society…”. True to this sentiment, we have practiced the concept of work-life management for over ten years, respecting work as well as other areas of our employees' lives.
In addition, we continue to promote productivity improvement through the elimination of long working hours and the realization of a healthy work-life balance.Specifically, we manage appropriate working hours while also striving to pay employees more than the legally-mandated minimum wage.In determining compensation, the personnel department offers payments on a standard that is above the legal standard while also observing laws and regulations.
As a prevention measure against COVID-19, we revised our previous request-based remote work system. Our employees, in principle, now must work from home during the period when a state of emergency is declared. Even after the state of emergency ends, we recommend a combination of working from home and working in the office, or working in staggered hours depending on their duties.Benesse Corporation also carried out a full renovation of their Tokyo headquarters in May 2021, aiming to create an office suitable for new work styles. They also abolished assigned seats based on an activity based working (ABW) concept, where workers select the optimal location based on the work they are doing as a place to create value (joint creation) with the team.Spaces for team building and collaboration were also improved. This has lead to the realization of a hybrid work style with less than 50% of work done in the office, combining remote work and work in the office. In FY2020, 70% of employees at the Benesse Corporation worked from home.
In addition to these programs, we keep employees from working long hours by promoting the use of paid holiday and by establishing no-overtime days, and we implement measures to ensure a healthy work-life balance through fair working hours.

Various consultation services have been established within the Benesse Group to support employees so that they can work while in good health, both mentally and physically. We offer support in problem resolution through coordinating with industrial physicians, human affairs, and various supervising departments within the company and through introducing outside specialists and organizations.
The Benesse Group’s businesses, such as education and nursing care, require us to have a particularly strong sense of ethics. We work to create an open workplace so that each employee of the Group can understand compliance and the Group can conduct its corporate activities correctly and sincerely.
We also have a structure that communicates this awareness of our employees to companies to improve our daily operations and workplaces.
The Benesse Group conducts a survey of all its employees to assess the present status of each company’s organization and culture.
Nearly 100 per cent of our employees participate in the survey that asks questions from the viewpoints of business administration of the Group and companies, organizational management, employee motivation, and compliance. The results of the survey are analyzed at each layer from the management level to each business line and utilized for business and organizational management. Designed to listen to the voice of each employee carefully and to utilize it for our future, the initiative has taken roots within the Group.
The Benesse Group has established the Speak Up Line as an internal reporting system for quick consultations and communications when an employee discovers an illegal or unfair action or an action that violates the Group's articles of incorporation or internal rules.
We are working to prevent a variety of problems as a company and to solve problems quickly through making appropriate use of this system.
